What’s In A Name
It’s a new year and we are very excited about the many features we have planned for the upcoming year. To start things off we’ve done something new and have designed a new logo and slogan for our flagship product.
If you haven’t already seen it at the website here it is.
For this posting we wanted to take some time to explain our new slogan – “Share. Manage. Collaborate”.
How we did it
When selecting a new slogan we wanted to come up with something that would represent our product quickly and easily. Many web 2.0 websites are based on made-up names or names that are nonsensical (there are a number of websites that we could mention but we’ll be nice.) Although clever, you can’t really tell what the product or service is about unless you visit the site.
With our slogan we wanted to come up with a plain, easy-to-pronounce and meaningful phase that would explain our service, but would also allow us to tell a story about how our solution benefits them.
Manage
A with most things in information technology, the main point is to provide ways to store and manage information. Examples include storing information on your hard-disk, iPod, Zip, USB or external drive. In the web world there are many options for storing information. The obvious benefit is that you can better manage data if it’s stored in a centralized location. Gone are the days of having to store your files on a 3.5 “inch floppy disks (weren’t they cool?) . And with other applications like iTunes and Tivo integrated with web technology, storing various types of information on permanent media (like music and video) are now becoming obsolete.
We see Joint Contact as a web-based tool that allows users to manage information that matters. Depending on your job this could be important documents, notes, a task list for a project you are working on, pictures you took on a recent vacation, or a list of important company contacts.
Share
When it comes to sharing information online we’ve seen a amazing explosion in the amount of services that allow you to share all types of information with with others online. With social networking sites, blogs and wikis (there’s another one of those funny names. “Wiki” is actually a Hawaiian word meaning “quick”) , cyberspace can attribute its success to people wanting to share information with a mass audience.
Our goal with Joint Contact is also to allow others to not only manage information, but to share it with other people. However, instead of sharing sensitive company documents and other important information to a mass audience (e.g. MySpace, Facebook) you control who can see any modify your content. This could be with other members on your engineering team, workers from a company you’ve partnered with, or a new customer located in a different part of the world.
Collaborate
Once you’ve established a platform for managing and sharing information, you can transform your information into something really useful by finding neat and interesting ways to collaborate. In the context of Joint Contact, this could be posting your meeting minutes as new Article (our equivalent of a discussion group) and inviting others in your 40 person group to comment. This could also be accomplished using email (as is the regular standard) but with email overload being a big concern with most organizations, people are looking for better ways to organize common forms of electronic communications.
